This course deals with one of the most ambitious projects of philosophy: G.W.F. Hegel’s vision of a system of “absolute knowing” as it is presented in the Phenomenology of Spirit. The first part of the course will be dedicated to a close reading of the first sections (Preface, Introduction) of the book and a general overview of the remaining chapters. The second part of the course will look at how Hegel’s philosophy influenced other major thinkers of the 19th century, including Ludwig Feuerbach (The Essence of Christianity), Karl Marx, and Max Stirner (The Ego and Its Own).

The Intended Learning Outcomes are

-        Students will have an in-depth understanding of Hegel’s philosophy and of key philosophical concepts.

-        Students will understand the influence of Hegel’s philosophy on the history of ideas.

-         Students will be able to critically express their understanding of Hegel’s philosophy in speech and writing.

Students will be able to apply their understanding of Hegel’s philosophy in discussions of philosophical problems.
