This course covers research, theory, and practical examples of leadership from a psychological perspective. We will examine how leadership is defined and how views of leadership have changed over time. Psychological contributions to understanding leadership form the primary basis of the course, including topics such as power and influence, personal qualities of successful leaders, leadership styles, group decision-making, motivational processes, and ethical leadership. Readings and discussions address how people become leaders, how environmental circumstances can encourage or inhibit potential leaders, and the various issues facing contemporary leaders. The central goal of this course is to help you understand what works (and doesn’t work) in leadership, thereby facilitating the growth of personal leadership skills across various leadership or followership positions.
