Course outline
This is a research course for Finance and Business Economics PhD students. It covers various stages of research including research design, research technique, samples, data collection and statistical analyses. The course specifically introduces students to basic research techniques in the areas of finance and economics. It covers basic knowledge of econometric techniques and expect the students to apply and utilize these skills to address empirical issues. It involves a learning-by-doing approach as students will apply the knowledge and technique to write down research ideas. Students are expected to use real world data and appropriate statistical software, such as SAS, Stata, etc. Selected papers from finance and economics areas will be discussed through lectures and journal paper discussions.

The following aspects in research are covered:
• literature review for selected topics in finance and economics.
• development of hypotheses/empirical predictions
• common research techniques in finance and economics
• writing research ideas.
