Human experience is shaped by the built environment. This seminar introduces students to the field of urban history with particular focus on the modern era. It reviews important and recent literature on urban history while introducing schools, concepts, perspectives, themes, challenges and cases studies. It provides students with an understanding of key moments and developments that have contributed to the rise of the city and the urban as objects of historical enquiry.
