This course introduces students to the poetic forms and styles that emerged in 20th and 21st century literatures in English and other languages, in response to social and cultural pressures to innovate and break with the past. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:
• describe and explain the formal characteristics of experimental poetry
• demonstrate understanding of the multi-modal nature of many experimental works, e.g. the relationship of the poem to art, music or other cultural domains.
• summarise the ‘manifestos’ of different experimental movements and relate them to specific poems
• develop means for accounting for the dissemination of literary ideas and forms across languages and cultures
