This course offers a broad survey of theories in anthropology by examining the field’s most prominent thinkers in their historical contexts. Topics include functionalism, symbolism, structuralism, materialism, and various approaches in cultural evolution. In addition to anthropological theories, we will also delve into the philosophy and methodologies of (social) sciences in general as the background, which will involve an exploration of how social scientists construct knowledge, the role of empirical evidence, and the contrast between qualitative and quantitative methods. By integrating these elements, the course aims to provide students with a well-rounded understanding of how anthropological knowledge is developed and situated within the larger framework of social sciences.
