Philosophy for the Future
Building a Global Philosophical Framework
This course introduces participants to groundbreaking philosophers and interdisciplinary thinkers whose work bridges Asian and Western traditions. Through studying world-leading scholars, participants will explore innovative "post-comparative" approaches to philosophy, examining how such boundary-crossing ideas can expand philosophical knowledge and foster a global philosophical culture. Philosophy has taken diverse forms across cultures throughout history, and while cross-cultural influences existed in pre-modernity, only recently has the concept of a “global philosophical culture”—where thinkers synthesize resources from diverse traditions—gained prominence. By addressing how insights and conceptual tools from Asian and Western philosophical traditions can be combined to create genuinely new frameworks, this course investigates the potential of philosophy to deepen inquiry, serve as an agent of cultural and societal change, and equip thinkers to address the unprecedented challenges of a rapidly changing world, such as environmental crises, technological transformations, and social inequalities. The overarching goal is to equip participants to think creatively and critically about the creation of a philosophy for the future.
