This is a postgraduate-level course which aims to introduce students to the rich cultural and literary history of Macao through a close reading of primarily English-language texts in which Macao features and/or is represented in various ways.  While the emphasis will be on written texts, students will also look at films, paintings, architecture, landscape design, statues/sculpture and other representational forms. The aim of the course is to teach students better to understand the historical and material environment of the city in which they study and to develop a sense of connectivity between past and present in Macao.  It is hoped that students will better appreciate the environment in which they live and study by having a greater understanding of the many-layered history of this city and how it is perceived by both its own residents and by visitors and travellers who might sojourn here from a few days to many years.  This is a course in literature that refers also to other cultural constructions and it hopes to show how these ideas feed off and complement each other.
